Ultrasound

Imaging method

Ultrasound, also known as sonography, is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of organs in the body. A transducer emits sound waves that are reflected back from the tissues. These reflections are received by the transducer and processed into images in real time. Sonography is painless and does not use X-rays.

Areas of application

Ultrasound can be used to examine any part of the body that is not surrounded by bone or air. Areas of application include the examination of organs, especially the abdominal organs, examination of soft tissue and muscles as well as the female breast as a complementary examination to the chest X-ray. Using ultrasound, the doctor can also perform minimally invasive procedures such as biopsies (taking tissue samples).

Fast, painless and without X-rays

An ultrasound examination does not require X-rays and is not a stressful examination. The examination is carried out personally by the doctor and is generally painless.

Reasons for ultrasound examinations

There are many medical reasons why an ultrasound examination is performed. Your referring physician will determine the indication for the examination. A further examination, e.g. MRI, may sometimes be necessary for the final assessment of changes detected by ultrasound.

Upper abdomen

Preparation is only required for an ultrasound of the abdomen. For this, you should fast at least 6 hours before the examination, i.e. not eat or drink anything. If it is not possible for you to do otherwise, drink at most one glass of water beforehand.

Lower abdomen

For an examination of the lower abdomen, the bladder should be full, as the doctor can only assess the structures in the lower abdomen properly if the bladder is full. No preparation is needed for other parts of the body, such as soft tissues or joints.

The result

The results of the examination will be sent to your referring physician together with the images on the same day. In some cases, despite good preparation, the results of the examination may be limited, e.g. if there is severe obesity or air overlay (gas in the stomach or intestines).
